This might be the place to mention this peice of art. One of the nicest ever made and considered one of the nicest 35mm bodies around. I had one for years and it was a pleasure to use.

Rolleiflex
Apr 11, 2009 - 12:51 AM - by Nando
Any Rolleiflex users here? I just acquired a 2.8 GX with a 5-element Planar HFT. It's a beautiful camera and I'm very much enjoying it.

The 5-element 80mm Planar on this camera is awesome! I find it much better than the CZJ 80mm Biometar MC (also a 5-element lens) and Arax/Arsat 80mm. I think I'm just going to use the Arax with the CZJ 50mm Flektogon MC and 180mm Sonnar MC for now on. If I want to shoot with an 80mm, It will be with the Rolleiflex.

So far, I only put one roll through it - Fomapan 100. I'm close to finishing a roll of Acros 100 - I'll likely develop it tomorrow night. Unfortunately, I don't have any colour 120 film on hand at the moment but I hope to try the new Ektar 100 once it becomes available in 120.

In what way is this forum committed to the Zeiss ideal?
Jan 29, 2009 - 10:04 PM - by Keith
The reason I ask this question is simple but the answer may be complex. Is this forum aimed at the Zeiss user as in 'dedicated Zeiss user' or is it it less structured and catering for a mere casual interest in the product.

I myself have very little in the way of Zeiss gear. I have an Ikon Zl which barely gets used since I bought my R3A/R4A Bessa combination and I have a Biogon 25mm f2.8 that I don't use much either because frankly I'm not that impressed with it ... which is rare I gather because everyone else seems to love the lens ... perhaps I got a dud!

How do others feel about this issue? I notice the forum is growing to the point where it will overtake 'Purelight's' membership numbers in another twenty members or so but how much will we grow here considering the focus on one manufacturer?

The new Zeiss Distagon T* 21 mm f/2.8 ZF—worthy heir to the throne?
Dec 12, 2008 - 8:20 PM - by Specularist
I stepped into this dark alley by making a wrong turn at The Online Photographer. But now that my eyes have adjusted, I reckon it's cosy enough.

I've been checking the Zeiss website every day or two for the datasheet on the new Distagon 21 mm. Okay, perhaps twice a day. They finally published it, and to my relief, the MTF charts are a lovely sight. If you haven't seen the datasheet head over here (PDF) and have a glance to make up your own mind.

The old Contax/Yashica-mount version was an astonishing performer: so much so that second-hand prices got a bit silly even though no-one used the lens on a Contax. It was particularly cherished for its fine rendition of obscure lens-testing charts when ghetto-rigged to Canon hardware.

I think it's fair to say that many doubted whether Zeiss could equal this legendary lens using only environmentally friendly glass types (no lead, arsenic, etc.), with possibly limited manufacturing capabilities, and a retail price below 1400 euros. It's a tough ask, and an impartial observer would note that not all ZF lenses have been masterpieces, even though the design effort demanded by a double-Gauss fast fifty or a short tele is moderate compared to a stellar 21 mm f/2.8.

Zeiss must have dusted off the old blueprints, for the new 21 mm Distagon is very similar to the old in performance and optical arrangement. But it does gain another element, 90 grams, and that perplexing chrome filter ring. As to performance, see my comparisons below. Red lines represent the old Distagon, while black is the new.

MTF at f/2.8 (with the usual conditions, etc):

MTF at f/5.6:

Light fall-off at f/2.8 and f/5.6:

Geometric distortion (scale goes to -3%, so they peak around -2.5%):

I think a round of applause is in order!
