I own this lens in the Canon mount and use it on a 5D Mark II. It's about an inch long. It's wonderfully built, with among the best manual focus action I've used. It's not as sharp as the Canon 35L, but it renders cleanly and crisply with a pleasant bokeh. And of course it's a fraction of the size and weight. For traveling light it can't be beat.
I have not used the macro lens attachment. The hood is built in, but there isn't much of a hood. So I use a Nikon metal flared screw-in shade with a Nikon lens cap. Personally I think that hood on the lens looks just right on the 5D.
My understanding is that for the Nikon version you must set the lens at maximum aperture. But for the Canon version that is not necessary. It is fully integrated with the EOS metering system; just mount and you're ready. It is manual focus only, but does have focus confirm.
All in all, and especially at its price, a great alternative to the heavy Canon L glass.
